Pastor Wayne Hedrick

The Rev. Wayne Hedrick officially became the spiritual leader of Luminary UMC July 1, 2020.

Pastor Wayne has been serving in the vocational ministry for 23 years, having come to the ministry as a third career at age 37. He has served the Tazewell Circuit in Tazewell Tenn., Jellico UMC, the Clinton Circuit in Clinton Tenn., The Norris Circuit in Norris Tenn., and Holston View UMC in Weber City, Va. He has been married to Sandra Jo Hedrick for 40 years and has three grown sons, all married.

Pastor Wayne comes from a family of Methodists dating back to the 1790s, with a few renegade Presbyterians mixed in. Pastor Wayne is not a native of East Tennessee but is proud to call it his home and is glad to be back.

His work history began at age 13 on a teacher’s truck farm in Maryland during the summers. Then, with a move to Kentucky, worked in tobacco. He graduated from Pendleton County High School in Falmouth, Ky., in 1978. That was also the year he began his service in the military, enlisting first in the Kentucky National Guard as a private. He would eventually serve for 17 years in the Guard and Reserves, mustering out as Captain of Engineers with his call into the ministry. He completed both a degree in Natural Resources and a Master of Public Administration at The Ohio State University.

While completing his degrees, he worked full time in security for Ashland Chemical Company in Dublin, Ohio, and as an RA in Botany for the Ohio State University. Upon undergraduate graduation he attended the Army Engineer Basic Course at Ft. Belvoir, Va., before starting graduate school.

After completing graduate school, he gained a position as a campaign division director with United Way of Summit County in Akron, Ohio, where he served for five years. Upon receiving a promotion to senior associate campaign director, he transferred to the United Way of Greater Chattanooga. It was while attending Ooltewah UMC that he received his call into ministry. Upon confirmation of his call he enrolled at Asbury Theological Seminary and graduated three years later.

Wayne loves people and the church because he loves Jesus Christ, and he is excited to serve Christ by serving and loving the people of Ten Mile and beyond.

Growing up as a part of a close knit church community, it was always my desire to serve others in any way that I could. After a career in retail management, my husband and I operated our own businesses and then retired in 2013. After retiring, we moved to Ten Mile to enjoy life at the lake. We love being a part of this busy Luminary family! It is a privilege to serve Luminary members and our community.
